Nationalized Health Care
During our disastrous Health care debate in the ’90s it was routine for Republicans to paint dark gloomy pictures of health care in Canada and Britain (France’s turn to be vilified had to wait for the Iraq war). GHW Bush “If you think nationalized health care is so great, ask a Canadian!”
So since I’m following Canadians, Brits, and Aussies.. how is your health care...
Finally saw Michael Moore’s Sicko — it is surprisingly good. It’s persuasive rather than accurate.. especially when he visits Cuba..
In other news, the early reports about the Bart killing were right. The officer...

People say that the fundamental product of the Chicago school of economics is helping rich old men stay rich.
My retort is that the fundamental product of the Keynsian school is giving the charismatic elite more power. Case in point.

McClatchy: Israeli troops killed Gaza children... →
The allegation is one of at least five such white flag incidents that human rights investigators are looking into across the Gaza Strip. It’s part of a growing pattern of alleged abuses that have raised concerns that some Israeli soldiers may have committed war crimes during their 22-day military campaign in Gaza.

Another Day of Job Cuts

Still waiting. Today’s job cuts were terrible again. The headlines:
UAW to End GM Jobs Bank on Feb. 2, Following Chrysler — Not exactly job cuts, but 1,600 new people collecting unemployment.
SAP to Cut More Than 3,000 Jobs Amid Global Slump — I’m guessing most of these cuts will be in Germany.

That’s a respectable list. I wonder how much it would cost to mail out 1,000 neon signs that simply say, “Don’t Panic.”

Please No, Not a Blade Runner Sequel →
“Travis Wright, one of the writers behind Eagle Eye, has been working on a sequel to Ridley Scott’s Sci-Fi classic Blade Runner. Script proposals have explored the nature of the off-world colonies, what happens to the Tyrell Corporation in the wake of its founder’s death, and what would become of Rachel. Travis said he intends to write a script “with or without...

A Dark Age of macroeconomics (wonkish) - Paul... →
The answer, I think, is that we’re living in a Dark Age of macroeconomics. Remember, what defined the Dark Ages wasn’t the fact that they were primitive — the Bronze Age was primitive, too. What made the Dark Ages dark was the fact that so much knowledge had been lost, that so much known to the Greeks and Romans had been forgotten by the barbarian kingdoms that followed.
And that’s what seems to...

“Foxman, Rosner and Obama’s January Surprise”
Heaven forfend that American policy should be afflicted with fairness. That Foxman would think this way is in itself merely disappointing, not shocking. It’s zero-sum thinking: even-handedness means a gain for Arabs, therefore a loss for Israel. It does not include the possibility that fairness will lead to peace, which will be better for...

But it didn’t happen. And all these people are the ones that kept playing with numbers, building castles in the sky, until it all came tumbling down. I keep picturing these ravenous pigs that the parents...

Added thought for cheapskates
If you’re trying to save money, an MMO addiction is the way to go.
For around $15/month you can abandon many costly real life commitments, each of which will cost $15-20 (and can of course be more, far more) for a single eveneing entertainment.
Don’t forget to eat meals, talk to your family, go to work, and get some exercise. No need to let things get out of hand.
