Let’s think about the assumptions law enforcement make in this video: force is justified simply because the students do not comply. That’s the standard. You are sitting where I told you not to sit, perp! It’s your own fault! I’m sure the police congratulated themselves for just using pepper spray - I bet the officer with the can would tell you - I mean, let’s just assume he wont start shoving you and yelling “Do you want to be arrested?” simply for talking to him -that pepper spray was superior to the alternatives: that the students are likely to struggle when the officers come to haul them away. Somebody could get hurt! they’d tell you. That the entire assumption is wrong - that the use of force on a citizen that is no threat to you or anyone else is wrong - seems lost and forgotten. This is a fatal step - for the police - to be seen as an occupying force instead of an organic part of the community they protect will undermine law enforcement and alienate the objects of their attention.
