As previously reported, NIN’s Trent Reznor, Rage’s Tom Morello, R.E.M., Pearl Jam, the Roots, Rise Against, Billy Bragg, Jackson Browne, and other famous musicians have joined the National Campaign to Close Guantanamo and released a string of statements condemning the use of music for torture at Gitmo. Well, it looks like the debate is heating up a bit:

Debra Burlingame, director of Keep America Safe, a political organization co-founded by Liz Cheney that focuses “on issues like troop levels, missile defense, detainees, and interrogation,” called Reznor and company’s political stand “pathetic,” telling the Washington Times:

It’s almost laughable to think that heavy metal bands like Nine Inch Nails and Rage Against the Machine have a moral authority on national security issues.

They’re worried about torture of hard-core terrorists? This is really something I would expect to read in the Onion.

I didn’t support the stimulus bill because I realized economics is cyclical. Sometimes it’s shit—nothing is perfect all the time. It’s a bummer when things go bad. Some people will be hurt worse than others. C’est la vie. We spent $1,000,000,000,000 to try to fix a problem. It didn’t work. We’re going to have to pay back that $1,000,000,000,000. It will likely come at a time in which we’re recovering. Higher taxes means less disposable income. Less disposable income means less spending, which means less buying, less production—less jobs. At this rate, this recession is going to be a lot longer than a couple years.

A) again, they need to actually spend the money and b) Keynesianism is about employment, so maybe getting A) done will help with B), but it’s all happening in slow waltz time.

Unemployment at 10.2% is only those who actively seek work. The actual rate of those who are unemployed is likely closer to 20%. 1 in every 5 working-age Americans is out of a job.

Remember when Obama said that we could stop unemployment from reaching double digits by spending $1 trillion? Could you imagine going to a cobbler, having him tell you he could fix your shoes for $1000, and having the soles fall off shortly thereafter?

In this case it’s more like we agreed to buy the $1000 shoes, but they’ve only accepted $50 from us and we’re still wearing the old shoes.
